Children in the Marketplace

“To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: ‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’”  Luke 7:31-32

Our God in Christ once described this generation of ours

He spoke of the one that inhabited the world during His time on earth and also the ones which dwell in the World to this day

He described them like spoiled children who whined and complained about other people.

They did not restrain themselves from judging others as mean and unthoughtful.

But at the same time, they placed themselves in a good light, and told of the wonderful things they did that had not been appreciated

How natural it is to see ourselves as the heroes and good actors, but to describe those around us in less than flattering ways. Or, even to go as far as judging them as evil doers and dangerous

How easy it is to elevate our deeds and views above others and to cast judgement against any and all that may disagree or be indifferent

But God says, our wisdom is proven right by it’s deeds

Jesus saw this tendency in the people of His time. He listened to those who opposed Him, while proclaiming their own righteousness; and felt the hatred as they judged Him as evil and a sinner

He watched them as they plotted against Him, while they argued against His Words and His ministry

Jesus listened, as they pronounced His miraculous works of healing and teaching, sin

They became so enraged at His actions, that threatened their ways, they became determined to have Him murdered. And when they ultimately carried out their plan, they called their actions righteous and defended it as necessary to save their nation

We are all described as God’s children

Our lives are a gift from God

He instructs us by His Word to live good and righteous lives before Him. Gos asks us to trust in Him above all things

We are not to pass judgement upon others, but to act wisely, and to live peaceably among all people

When we elevate ourselves above others, we enter dangerous territory. For we are to be God’s servants, and should carefully regard our place before Him

In these times there are things that amplify the voices of our ‘spoiled children.’ They multiply the messages that only serve to divide and weaken us.

The result of this has caused hatred and distrust to overrun our country. It has caused disruption across the entire world

But worst of all, it leads us away from living a life that Christ calls us to

There is room for discussion of the things that God has called us to. But it has now become more difficult to speak sensibly to one another

It is impossible to bring peace when literally millions of selfish voices scream hate and nonsense. It is hard to respect eachother, when complaint and judgement is encouraged to rule above love and understanding

Unfortunately, the voices of sense, goodness, even those led by God’s own Spirit are becoming lost in all the noise, and in the drama

God’s Word is eternal and it will never be extinguished. but there are many places where it cannot be truly found these days.   5/5/2024
